1. Wait for documents that confirm the inheritance
Keys or a registration certificate do not by themselves authorise a sale. Obtain the inheritance documents and, where there are several heirs, clarify who owns the vehicle and who may sign the contract.
You can collect the VIN, condition details and photographs for a preliminary valuation, but ownership must be clear before the vehicle is transferred.
2. Declare ownership and obtain a new SDK
Regitra says ownership must be declared within 5 working days after the inheritance documents are received. The heir is then issued a new owner declaration code; the deceased owner’s code cannot be used for a new sale.
Check the current service channel and required documents with Regitra, especially when there are multiple heirs or foreign inheritance documents.

3. Registration in the heir’s name is not always required
Regitra’s FAQ confirms that an heir who intends to sell must still obtain a new SDK. After ownership is declared, the vehicle does not have to be registered in the heir’s name if it will be transferred to another person.
The sale contract must identify the true seller and state the vehicle details, real price, known defects, payment method and current SDK.
